An award-winning programme in over 40 countries worldwide, Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) gives young people aged 10-24 years a platform to research environmental issues and promote solutions through investigative reporting, photography, and video journalism. Our participation is through pillar partner and NGO Green Growth Asia Foundation (GGAF). In 2020, two YRE students visited The Datai Langkawi and created educational videos on The Datai Pledge. They then utilised their learnings to create a video series presentation on sustainability and ecotourism, for presentation at Malaysian schools. Also in 2020, we participated in five YRE webinars on various issues addressing conversation and sustainability. Visit the official global website for YRE here for more information on this programme.
In 2021 and 2022, our pillar leader Johan Abdullah joined a panel of evaluators for the programme’s essay competition. The award ceremony was held at The Datai Langkawi with Arnaud Girodon, The Executive Administrator of The Datai Pledge and then General Manager of The Datai Langkawi (now CEO of Datai Hotels and Resorts), presenting the awards to the 6 winners.

Organised on a regular basis, volunteer Dataians from all departments take turns collecting between 50 - 200 kg of trash during each beach clean-up.
The Datai Pledge aims to integrate sustainability and conservation into all aspects of The Datai Langkawi’s business operations and guest experiences.
