To combat the effects of deforestation, a Native Tree Nursery has been established. The focus of the initiative is to grow food and nectar plants specifically suited for birds, butterflies and mammals, as well as planting canopy trees. Amongst others, we have partnered with the Department of Forestry Peninsular Malaysia in the Penghijauan Malaysia (Greening of Malaysia) reforestation programme and have received 1,000 saplings in February 2021 as part of this nationwide programme. Over 17,000 seeds have been collected between the years 2021 and 2023 from the grounds of the surrounding Datai Bay rainforest, and nearly 4,000 trees have been planted, with continued gathering and maintenance of these seedlings until they are ready for tree adoption and to be replanted as part of our reforestation projects across the island.

Datai Bay was once a site for turtles to nest (the last sighting prior to the year 2021 was in the late ‘90s).
Choose between our programmes where all funds go directly towards the sustainability and conservation work of The Datai Pledge, with all proceeds shared equally amongst the four NGO and social enterprise partners.
Due to a loss of their rainforest habitat and poaching, there has been an increasing decline in the number of hornbills in Langkawi.
