Hornbill Nesting Boxes

Due to a loss of their rainforest habitat and poaching, there has been an increasing decline in the number of hornbills in Langkawi. For the largest bird on the island, the Great Hornbill, the reduced prevalence of trees with large natural cavities in which they create their nests threatens their existence.

This was evidenced in Teluk Datai when a pair of resident Great Hornbills had many unsuccessful nesting seasons. A nesting box has since been created for them and we hope that this will encourage their chances to nest and thrive. Together with our hornbill conservationist partner Gaia, we aim to build and install more of these nesting boxes and create more natural habitats.
