The Datai Pledge Initiatives

All of our initiatives are aimed to support the overall goals of The Datai Pledge – to be an active instigator for sustainable change and regenerative travel; they range from community outreach projects to adoption programmes, to projects to support our local flora and fauna. They are led by The Datai Pledge pillar leaders and teams, naturalists, marine biologists, and experts, including our visiting NGO and social enterprise partners.

Community Outreach

Comprehensive and far-reaching, the community support programme of The Datai Pledge is the result of a holistic, cross-pillar approach, producing both tangible short and longer-term results.

Zero Waste to the Landfill

First achieved in December 2022, we aim to prevent waste from reaching the landfill. On an annualised basis, 94% of waste is processed on site, with no food waste being sent to the landfill anymore at all.

Carbon Management Programme

With the target to implement an industry leading robust carbon management programme within Datai Bay, carbon emissions have been calculated yearly by EarthCheck, since 2018.

Wildlife Corridors

Langkawi’s great loss of its natural wildlands has resulted in fragmented zones that threaten the existence of wildlife. We aim to reconnect fragmented zones by establishing wildlife corridors across the island.

Reforesting Langkawi

To combat the effects of deforestation, a Native Tree Nursery has been established, to grow food and nectar plants specifically suited for birds, butterflies and mammals, as well as planting canopy trees.

Wildlife Camera Traps

A database on Langkawi’s terrestrial vertebrates via camera trapping is currently in development. Our team of naturalists are continuously monitoring footage and deploying new devices.

Coral Restoration Programme

Research indicates that although Malaysian reefs have a relatively high average level of live coral cover at 40.63%, a decline has been recorded over recent years.

Beach Clean-Ups

Organised on a regular basis, volunteer Dataians from all departments take turns collecting washed up debris during our beach clean-ups or 'Gotong-Royongs'.

Turtle Project

Datai Bay was once a site for turtles to nest (the last sighting prior to the year 2021 was in the late ‘90s). Since 2021, we have been working to regain the bay as a turtle-friendly beach by creating the right conditions.

Hornbill Nesting Boxes

Due to a loss of their rainforest habitat and poaching, there has been an increasing decline in the number of hornbills in Langkawi.

Young Reporters for the Environment

An award-winning programme in over 40 countries worldwide, Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) gives young people aged 10-24 years a platform to research environmental issues.

Adoption Programmes

Choose between our programmes to adopt a dolphin, tree, or coral, where all funds go directly towards the sustainability and conservation work of The Datai Pledge.
